Independent Brighton: Our favourite spots to explore this summer
Beautiful Brighton is famous for all things colourful and creative, including the wonderful array of unique shops, bars, galleries, coffee shops and more that can be found throughout the city. Brighton is a hub for independent businesses run with personality, creativity, and genuine passion. We're exceptionally proud to be an independent hotel, having thrived on Brighton's beautiful seafront for 155 years. We're taking a moment to celebrate our favourite independent businesses here in Brighton, which also happen to be some of the very best spots to spend an autumnal afternoon or evening in the city.
Gin distillery - Brighton Gin
Gin-lovers simply cannot miss sampling a perfect Brighton Gin & tonic (served with a slice of orange, of course!) whilst here in Brighton.
It's distilled with juniper, milk thistle, and fresh orange and lime peel, and is made and bottled by hand in their local distillery.
Visit the distillery for a guided tour or try this unique, local G&T back at The Grand Brighton.
Bakery - Flour Pot Bakery
Flour Pot has become somewhat of an institution here in Brighton, where they have spread across the city serving up their range of delicious sourdough, rye, focaccia and some lovely cakes too.
Their newest lovely location, which has a more extensive menu and serves alcohol, is now open in the King’s Road arches on the seafront just opposite The Grand - a great spot for people watching.
Flowers - Gunn's Florist
Beautiful Gunn's Florist is a one-stop shop for flowers, houseplants, and arrangements for any occasion.
They have two lovely shops in central Brighton which make for great, green browsing and their expert team are always friendly and helpful.
Ice cream - Gelato Gusto
Nestled in the heart of the North Laine you will find Gelato Gusto, an artisan Italian gelato parlour that has been much-loved since it's doors opened in 2012.
We love their gelato so much that we use them as our exclusive supplier for gelato and sorbet in both our restaurant and lounge.
Music - Resident
You'll find Resident, Brighton's favourite record shop and the home of "music for all ears, from all eras", on bustling Kensington Gardens.
Take time to browse their extensive collection, listen to some of their favourite new albums, and sometimes even catch a live show.
Workshop - The Painting Pottery Cafe
This fabulously fun creative studio offers a range of items that you can paint as well as taster throwing workshops where you can try making your own piece from clay.
Even if it's your first time throwing a pot or painting your own design, you'll be sure to receive a warm welcome and expert guidance from their lovely team who have been bringing a splash of colour and creativity to Brighton for more than 20 years.
Vintage gems - Snooper’s Paradise
A little further down Kensington Gardens you will also find Brighton's famous vintage, antique, and bric-a-brac emporium, Snooper's Paradise!
True to its name, this huge shop is almost overflowing with curious and delightful vintage items, including clothes, games, books, and homeware.
Magazines - Magazine Brighton
Who says print is dead? It's alive and kicking at wonderful Magazine Brighton, who source beautiful and luxurious publications across all sorts of genres. Pick up a unique travel guide, a special journal, or a quirky magazine. Browsing in their lovely shop and flicking through the pages of such gorgeously designed products is always a treat.
Eco friendly - Hisbe
Much-loved local favourite Hisbe (How It Should Be) is an independent supermarket that is committed to selling quality ethical, seasonal, and environmental friendly products. You'll find a range of amazing locally-sourced food and drink as well as handy household products to help you cut down on single use plastics.
Art - Fabrica Gallery
Wander through the lanes and pop into the gallery at Fabrica, a visual arts organisation housed in an exquisite former Regency church. Explore a contemporary art exhibition, take a unique creative workshop, or see a special film screening. Visit their website for more information on exhibitions and events.
